Vale Man Charged in Fatal Accident

An 89-year old Vale, Oregon man was arrested Tuesday night by Oregon State Police on manslaughter and DUI charges following a two-vehicle fatal head-on crash on Highway 26 just west of Jamison, in northern Malheur County.

According to OSP Lieutenant Richard Pileggi, at about 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, a 1988 Ford F-150 pickup occupied by David Messer, 60, from Brogan, Oregon, was stopped on Highway 26 facing westbound near the eastbound shoulder fog line with his hazard lights on.  A 1990 Ford pickup driven by Warren Edwards, 89, from Vale, was eastbound and collided with the right front section of the stopped pickup.

Messer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Edwards refused medical treatment and was subsequently arrested by OSP for Manslaughter in the Second Degree and DUI.  He was also cited for not having an operators license and having an open alcohol container in a vehicle. He was booked into the Malheur County Jail.

Police do not yet know if either paty was wearing a seat belt.

OSP troopers from the Ontario Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of Malheur County District Attorney's Office.
