Multiple Car Pileup on I-84 Causes Traffic Backups

Emergency crews spent hours Saturday cleaning up debris from a 22 vehicle chain-reaction crash that happened on Interstate 84 near Glenns Ferry. Police shut down the freeway in the area for six hours Saturday so crews could clear the scene.

"This is by far the biggest crash we have had this season," said Trooper Ken Beckner. "It's not very often that we shut down the interstate down like this for four or five hours."

Snow, icy roads and fog played a role in the crash.

Paul Tonks was in his big-rig when the pile up began to happen right in front of his truck.

"I could see vehicles starting to slow down so I stopped, about three or four other ones went by me on the right and just piled up right there in front of me," Tonks said.

Six people were taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries, none were life threatening.

"I'm sure that most of those guys had a good following distance, but they just didn't react in time, especially that one carrying that big trailer," Tonks said.

Traffic was flowing normally again by around 3:30 p.m.
