BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Idaho Republicans are pushing to cut individual and corporate income taxes by more than a third over the next decade, saying it would lure businesses and pump life into the slumping state economy.
Idaho's corporate income tax rate is 7.6 percent; for individuals, it runs up to 7.8 percent.
Both would be slashed to 4.9 percent over 10 years, under the plan from House Majority Leader Mike Moyle, R-Star, and Reps. Raul Labrador, of Eagle, and Marv Hagedorn, of Meridian.
The three House tax hawks say reducing rates to below levels of surrounding states will help bring companies to Idaho.
One Democrat, Rep. Shirley Ringo of Moscow, said the GOP plan is irresponsible, given agencies and public schools here are already being forced to scrimp -- and a tax cut could make things worse.
She supports a 5 percent income surcharge to raise $44 million annually and help dig Idaho out of its budget crisis.
